Lagos is known for its markets: Idumota market, Oshodi market, Ajah market, Ikeja market, Computer Village, etc. because of how rich the city is in geographical grand plan—the wide reach of inhabitants make it an exhilarating environment for businesses to utilize. You can walk into these markets and you get nothing but Quality over Quantity, i.e., importing and exporting. It is also known for fun places to visit for vacations, holidays, and self-care, places like a recreation center, the beach, cinemas, etc.

It is therefore, no wonder Lagos is called the Centre of Excellence because of how fun and calm over 20millions of people synchronize to work with the resources available for the country’s progress and well-being, which brings us to discuss the average daily income of a Commercial bus driver in this article.

An average Commercial bus driver is allocated to trail on a designated route, and pick up travelers and passengers to a stipulated journey’s end. They liaise with passengers by answering their questions about the route. They obey all traffic rules and regulations and also adhere to state and federal movement or transport laws. They follow safety precautions and measures. For you to be a bus driver, you have to be very skilled in all of these and experience they say is the best teacher.

The average daily income of a Commercial bus driver in Lagos can differ relying on a variety of factors to consider such as:

  • Adventure/ Experience: Experienced bus drivers have profound knowledge or deeper understanding of roads because they are used to driving every day and mostly on the expressway, which makes them have good driving skills, i.e., knowing more routes to specified locations and a good record of highway safety. Also, another element to making sure a commercial bus driver is well experienced Is attributed to the fact that before a transportation company employs a driver, they examine your experience before deciding on your income. The more bus driver gain experience and increase their skills, the more potential to earn a higher wage. An example of this is, if a Lagos commercial bus driver is very skilled and knows many routes from Berger to Ikeja, collecting 500 NGN with a 16-seater bus per trip, that is roughly 8,000 NGN per trip. If the bus driver can go for 11-16 trips in a day, the average daily income of a commercial bus driver will range from 88,000 NGN to 128,000 NGN per day.

  • Traffic: Traffic gridlock is also one of the factors that affect the daily income of a commercial bus driver, depending on the reach of trips a driver can go in a day due to bad roads, construction of roads, and many more, which makes a journey slow,  and reduces the numbers of passengers and numbers of trips the bus driver can make or pick in a day.
An example of this is, if a Lagos commercial bus driver usually takes 11 trips in a day with a 9-seater minibus, collecting, 300 NGN per trip from 7Up to Berger, the estimated price income will be  2,700 NGN per trip and a total of 29,700 NGN per day. But, if the bus driver is blocked in traffic and can only do 6 trips in a day, the average income will be 16,200 NGN for the day.

  • Hike in fuel price: Lately, there has been an inflation in the fuel price in Nigeria due to the removal of subsidies on all PMS. If there's a hike in fuel price, it automatically means that bus drivers will have to elevate their transport fares because they need to spend more on fuel to keep their buses working. Sometimes they are at an advantage because even private car owners will have to jump on a bus if they can't afford to buy petrol for their cars, an average passenger will be with no choice but to also jump on a bus because they need to get to work or get somewhere else. Or, when Transport companies indemnify drives that can still work due to the hike in price. For example, if a Lagos commercial bus driver usually takes like 10 trips in a day with a 16-seater bus, collecting 700 NGN per trip from Oshodi to Lekki, the estimated price income will be 11,200 NGN per trip. But, since the hike in fuel price, if the bus driver decides to collect 1,000 NGN per trip from a 16-seater bus, the estimated income price will be 16,000 NGN per trip, which brings us to the daily income of a Lagos commercial bus driver that can go on 9-10 trips by day, which is 144,000 NGN to 160,000 NGN per day.

It is important to note that there is no specific amount of daily income for a commercial bus driver in Lagos and the above amounts are stated as a general overview and possible estimation made. Also, it is essential to mention that the above-stated income does not calculate the final income of the day after the deduction of the fuel for the vehicle, NURTW charges, or any mechanical visit or needs of the vehicle.
