Digital marketing is the new exciting phase for business owners, organizations, and entrepreneurs. If you have acquired digital marketing skills, you are in for some good time of grand opportunities with these organizations. Landing a digital marketing role goes beyond just having the skills, you need to send out job applications after which you will be invited for interviews. In preparation for the interview, it is advisable to get familiar with some questions and find answers to them. The reason for doing this is to ensure that you are not caught off guard even when asked the simplest of questions. Therefore, if you are a digital marketer looking to attend a job interview, here are common interview questions you may encounter. 

Can you share your experience with digital marketing and the different strategies you have implemented?

Your resume or CV has probably stated your experience with digital marketing but the interviewer needs to hear from you because they are interested in knowing your level of expertise, the scope of your knowledge, and your ability to apply effective strategies. As much as you want to be brief while answering this question, be a little broad. Give a summary of your experience and the productive strategies you have employed in previous times. So, you can just say; 

" I have worked as a digital marketer for over 3 years and have developed a couple of working strategies for different campaigns during my previous roles. One of the key strategies I executed was a content marketing campaign that was aimed at generating organic traffic for a website. To pull this off, I went into deep keyword research and recognized valuable topics to suit the needs of the target audience. I also leveraged a content calendar that helped me to collaborate with the content team to create engaging, relatable, and informative blog posts and videos to increase brand visibility."

What is your knowledge of SEO and how do you incorporate it into your digital marketing strategies? 

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is an important aspect of digital marketing. It focuses on ensuring website and content ranking and visibility. Your interviewer is asking you this question because they want to be sure that you know about SEO and that you can leverage it properly to drive organic traffic. Therefore, when you are asked, within a short time, relay everything you know about SEO and how you have used it in your past projects. To answer, you can say; 

"I have a deep understanding of what SEO is and I have been using it to drive organic traffic for the past 3 years, even until now. I have used SEO to improve organic search ranking and steer targeted traffic to a website. One of the major techniques that worked for me was keyword research and optimization. I made sure that the keywords were strategically incorporated into the website's metatags, headings, content, and URLs. 

I also focused on building high-quality backlinks to improve the website's domain authority. Furthermore, I regularly monitor the website performance using analytical tools such as Google Analytics and Google Search Console." 

What tools have helped you to perform effectively as a digital marketer? 

For every creative, tools are important and unavoidable. Your interviewer knows this and wants to see how well-versed you are with tools relevant to digital marketing. To answer this question, highlight all of the tools you have used and how they positively impacted your projects and digital marketing efforts. You can say; 

 

"I have worked as a digital marker for 3 years and during this period, I have worked with different tools that greatly helped me to be an effective digital marketer. Some of these tools include Canva - which I use to create graphical content for social media, blog posts, and ads, Google Analytics - for tracking website performance, analyzing user behavior and content effectiveness, SEMRush - for suggesting keyword rankings, backlink profiles and identifying opportunities for improving search engine visibility, and MailChimp - for managing email campaigns."

How do you feel when a campaign doesn't turn out well? 

Sometimes, campaigns and projects won't go as planned; so, when the interviewer asks this question, they want to know how you can handle setbacks, learn from them and maintain a positive attitude. They want to be sure you can take ownership of outcomes. To give a good answer, you can say; 

"While it can be disappointing to get a different outcome from a project you spent so much time and resources on, I, however, think it's an avenue to learn something new and even forge ahead fiercely." 

How well do you know your way around paid advertising platforms? 

Most times, as a digital marketer, you will have to run advertisements using different platforms. The interviewer is asking to be sure you are aware of this and also determine your level of proficiency in creating and managing paid campaign ads, optimizing ad performance, and gauging the outcome of the ad. You can answer like this; 

" I have worked with different paid advertising platforms which include Google ads, Facebook ads, Instagram, and Twitter ads and I know how they all work. I have successfully managed and implemented campaigns on these platforms and they have turned out really well, generating leads and increasing conversions."

How do you approach creating a digital marketing strategy for a new product or service? 

This is where the main job of a digital marketer is, so you must let your interviewer understand your creativity, strategic thinking, and ability to come up with a good and detailed plan. Make sure to mention each step of your intended plan and explain each of them briefly but properly. You can say; 

"To create a marketing strategy for a new product, I follow a step-by-step process which includes understanding the target audience, establishing achievable goals, picking the digital marketing channels to use, developing messaging and positioning, planning content creation and distribution, and measurement and tracking." 

Can you walk me through a few digital marketing trends for 2023? 

While you may know a lot of digital marketing trends, when your interviewer asks this question, only mention the key ones relevant to the digital marketing field. You can answer like this; 

"Sure, I can. Some of the digital marketing trends this year include influencer marketing, voice-search optimization, chatbots, content marketing, and Short videos (Instagram reels, and YouTube shorts)."
