In most organizations, there may be a probationary period for new employees. You and your employer should have mutually agreed to this arrangement for a predetermined timeframe, usually between 1-6 months which would be stated in your offer letter. During this period, your company may set some KPIs for you which will be used to evaluate your performance during the probation period.
Do's And Don'ts During Your Probation Period
Bear in mind that during your probation period, you are yet to become a full staff of the organization. Against what so many people feel, your probationary period is a time when your company offers a ton of helpful support and training to help you improve and meet the requirements of the role. Therefore, rather than being afraid, this period should be seen as a positive one that would have a long-term impact on your job with the organization.
Do's
- Have a thorough understanding of the responsibilities
- Sit down with your line manager to discuss the expectations set
- Make sure you have a clear understanding of how the company works
- Depending on your role, you may want to spend some time getting to know your customer/client base
- Ensure you are actively listening and engaging with your new team
- If you are not sure about something, ask for help
- Take responsibility
- Keep track of any achievements you make during your probationary period
Don'ts
- Try not to take any holidays during your probationary period
- Never turn up late for work
- Never come back late from your lunch break
- Try not to get involved in any conflict with stakeholders
- Avoid gossiping
