When I was much younger, whenever I drove passed the streets of Lagos, I always looked at these writings on the walls of Lagos and wondered what it is all about. As I grow older, A lot of times, I have overheard people asking "Is it every day people move into Lagos?" I am sure it is because of the filled streets of Lagos with people. And Lagosian always says "The city of Lagos is for hustlers and will only belong to the people with the hustling vibes". Lagos does not sleep and so do the people in it. As an average Lagosian, I am sure you have come across these writings on the walls in public places, electricity polls, Roadside buildings, public toilets, and public buildings, these writings flood the streets of Lagos from Obalende to Oshodi, Onipanu, Cement, PWD, there are barely places within Lagos you will pass without seeing these writings. These writings have to do with the factory works, At first, I used to think "Who will call these people for these jobs” However, on a fateful day, I was coming from Oshodi to Ikeja and I saw these writings on the way, I was soliloquizing about these writings, and how I wondered if people really call and get jobs from it, and the man beside me responded, " Yes Aunty, I even got my job through one of those contacts”. With this, it came to mind the number of Lagosians who are looking for factory jobs and how many employment opportunities these factories actually provide. 

There are several Factories in Lagos, and they deal in different businesses, some of which include 

  • Plastic manufacturing 
  • Fabric manufacturing 
  • Sewing of ready-to-wear 
  • Drug productions 
  • Vegetable oil and Palm oil productions 
  • Home appliances 
  • Shoe and slippers 
  • Cement and other building materials 

There are so many factories in Lagos, that you can rarely think about something that we do not have a factory for in Lagos. Although, most of these factories are not owned by Lagos citizens, but they are definitely operated in Lagos and have been providing various employment opportunities for the people of Lagos. However, Working in a factory is of different categories. We have the professionals/educated category and the unprofessional/Uneducated category.


The Professional category of factory workers in Lagos 

In this category, we have the Lagosians who are experts in their chosen fields, they have passed through education and have certification in these fields. Some of the experts in this category include:

Factory Accountant: This set of factory workers is in the accounting department of the factory. They are in charge of everything relating to the finances and accounts of the factory. These factory professionals carry out financial analyses and audits of the factory. Ensure all accounts are balanced and also put in place financial strategies that can improve the factory’s account. A factory accountant would have educational knowledge and certification in Accounting or any other related field. 

Factory Engineers: There is no factory without the equipment and machinery they use for production. Hence, it is no surprise that there is a high demand for engineers at the factories. If you are an engineer and you are interested in getting employed, you should not put out factories in your search. There are different engineering opportunities at the factories which depend on the type of factory and what they produce. Generally, some of these engineering jobs are always in high demand – Chemical engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, petroleum engineers, and so on. The Unprofessional category of factory workers in Lagos 

These are the people without any concrete or formal tertiary education, they mostly do jobs that do not require expertise or experience at the factory. These people are important to the day-to-day running of the factory thou and they are usually in high demand. Some of these jobs include 

Factory Cleaners In Lagos: These are people who clean the factory and ensure it is in good and conducive condition. A lot of work happens in a factory, so it is no surprise that it can get littered and dirty from time to time. There is no specific educational requirement to work as a Factory cleaner. Having an idea of English for communication is however important. 

Factory Carry and Lifting Men In Lagos: These are people who do the heavy lifting and carrying within the factory, They can load the products into vehicles for sales and distribution, or they can offload raw materials when they arrive at the factory. They also help in moving equipment or materials from one place to another within the factory. These people are important in the running of the factory. They also do not need any formal education to get employment. The ability to communicate and be physically fit is a major necessity 

Factory Sales Representatives In Lagos: Have you noticed these people who advertise products on the street of Lagos, they can wear matching T-shirts with the factory or brand names on them. They serve as sales representatives and marketers for the factory. They go from door to door to market these factory's products and ensure sales. In most cases, there are no educational requirements apart from having basic English communication and a strong knowledge of the streets and roads of Lagos. Another good news is, that there is never a shortage of requests for these workers in Lagos. 

Factory Production Assistance In Lagos: These factory workers are the people who help with the packaging and moving of the products, They pack, count, and ensure that products are sealed and put in the right place and order. They contribute to making production and packing faster and swift. There is usually a high demand for these workers in factories too. Also, no tertiary education is necessary.
