Highest Paying Finance Jobs In The World

There is a natural adrenaline rush with careers related to finance. Perhaps this is because finance is as old as civilization itself or it's because when we think of a finance career, our minds automatically associate it with money. The five highest-paying finance jobs in the world are listed in this article, along with what makes them so unique.

Highest Paying Finance Jobs In The World

Hedge Fund Managers

Hedge fund managers are like pop stars when in the finance world. They handle hedge funds. A hedge fund is a fund in which a large number of investors combine their money and pay a fee to a skilled manager to invest it for them. But there's a catch: almost all hedge funds only work with ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNIs). Larger hedge funds generally manage assets worth billions of dollars. As a result, they only hire the finest and brightest from the world's most prestigious institutes. Compensation for hedge fund managers varies, but there is a commonly regarded industry-wide norm that makes it one of the highest-paying finance jobs.

Hedge Funds Manager Salary

The salary of a hedge fund manager, like that of most other professions, follows a pyramidal structure. Those at the very top earn exorbitant sums. For example, in 2020, the top 25 hedge fund managers earned more than $32 billion in salary. An average hedge fund manager earns around $145,437 per year. However, due to the commission-based pay structure of most hedge funds, there is no upper limit to how much hedge fund managers can make, which makes hedge funds manager the highest-paid professionals in finance.

Investment Bankers

The mythological entities tugging the strings of the global economy from the ivory towers and gilded chambers of the world's financial nerve centers are investment bankers. Pioneering investment bankers such as J.P. Morgan, Marcus Goldman, and Samuel Sachs, to mention a few, lay the groundwork for most of what we now call contemporary finance. Each of them has given his or her name to institutions that govern the global movement of funds. An investment banking career is a very lucrative one.

Private Equity Consultant

Private equity (PE) consultants or investors work hand-in-hand with a hedge funds manager. This is because a hedge funds manager simply pools money from multiple investors and invests it while a private equity consultant helps run the businesses in which a hedge funds manager invests. That is, success in private equity involves not only investment but also business ability. Because of this highly specialized skill set, private equity firms are quite discriminating in who they hire, and once they identify the ideal candidate, they are known to go the extra length to onboard such an individual.

Private equity consultants are also notoriously elite, with a penchant for forming an exclusive club among themselves. As a result, major private equity firms only hire from the world's premier business schools.

Venture Capitalist

The practice of venture capital (VC) is a subfield of private equity. The distinction between the two is seen in where each likes to invest. While private equity consultants seek stable businesses to invest in, venture capitalists seek startups to seed, incubate, grow, and exit. Because the fundamental skill set required is similar, VCs and PEs hire from similar schools. Salaries of venture capitalists are at par with that of private equity consultants but we have more private equity investors than venture capitalists.

Finance Professor

According to Poets & Quants research from 2018, finance professors at top business schools earn half a million dollars per year on average. This does not include the compensation they receive for consulting jobs for the industry, to which they are not only entitled, but also encouraged.
