How to Become a more adaptable leader

According to a popular author, John. C. Maxwell, ''a leader is a person who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.'' This connotes that a leader is not just someone who charts the course and expects people to follow but also one who can adjust to changing circumstances and guide the team through abrupt impediments.

Leadership may sound like a title, but that's not all it is. Being a leader means that you possess a mindset and a set of skills that can withstand rigorous times and practices. Your leadership journey may not always be a merry-go ride, on some days, the chips will go down. These challenges may test a leader's ability to make tough decisions, handle pressure, and stay committed to their goals. All of these may be difficult to achieve if a leader is struggling with adaptability; to cross this bridge, here are a few things you can do.

Adopt Creative Thinking

Creative thinking allows a leader to approach a problem from different angles that may have not been considered before. This is more like a “thinking outside the box” thing because a regular solution may not work for the current situation. A leader has to listen to their team, explore different ideas and perspectives, and also understand the critical viewpoints that suggestions may come from.

Be Flexible

Rigidity does not work in leadership. It only leads to missed opportunities and causes a block on the company's success. A flexible leader is open to changes and willing to change course when the need arises. In response to unexpected events, a leader should be able to pivot quickly and understand that things may not always go as planned. While it may be hard to discard a tradition that you have been used to, you have to let go of them if they are no longer effective. No one saw the Covid-19 Pandemic coming in 2020, but several employees were made to work from home to ensure safety.

Stay Informed

It is even harder when an unforeseen situation creeps in on you because "you had no idea". Constantly, search your external environment to identify emerging trends, shifts in customers' needs, drops in purchase power of goods, and potential disruptors; never be caught " unaware". Being prepared means that you have a plan in place on how to respond to unforeseen occurrences.

Develop a sense/skill of composure

Leaders can think clearly and make better decisions when they are calm. Composure is very essential for seeing through a situation and moving on effectively because this eliminates every tendency to make impulsive decisions or react emotionally which can result in ugly situations. When a team realizes how calm their leader is, it gives them the confidence to press on and to believe that success is possible regardless of the situation at hand.

Be Real

When the situation calls for having difficult conversations, leaders need to be clear and direct in their communication. Sugar-coating tough issues can lead to confusion and misunderstandings. However, this does not mean that the team's contribution should be discarded; leaders can accommodate open communication while trying to convey a message about the state of things.

Build a support system

Sometimes, a person can hold on much longer because there are other people around, cheering them on, endorsing them, and sending comfort their way. Challenges and setbacks are navigated with much confidence when there is a strong support system. A support system can be your friend, mentor, colleague, or family member and you can lean on their presence to grow a tough skin.

For leaders, adaptability is a non-negotiable element. You can't back off or draw the curtains completely when a situation arises, instead, allow yourself to be more responsive to change and identify new opportunities to carry on.
