Talent Agents work closely with individuals in the entertainment industry because they have specific skills and experience that can greatly assist these professionals in their careers.
Who is a Talent Agent?
A talent agent is an expert who works on behalf of a particular brand, usually entertainment, to secure opportunities, negotiate contracts, and progress in the career. These brands can be professionals such as producers, actors, directors, writers, and musicians. Simply, we can say that talent agents act like middlemen or intermediaries for creatives and people who need their services.
Responsibilities of a Talent Agent?
Serve as the primary point of contact between the client and industry professionals.
Find opportunities such as auditions, gigs, performances, or speaking engagements for their clients.
Maintain extensive networks and industry contacts to stay informed about potential opportunities.
Negotiate contracts on behalf of clients.
Help clients make decisions about their careers and suggest opportunities that will align with a client's request.
Promoting and marketing clients' work to increase visibility.
Arranging interviews and meetings.
Management of client's calendar.
Prioritizing the client's best interest and maintaining confidentiality.

How do you become a talent agent?
Asides from just having a knack for creativity, there are other requirements for being a talent agent and we have discussed them here.
Have at least a high school certificate
This is not to say that you don't need higher certificates but it is expected that you have a minimum of a secondary school leaving certificate to apply for job vacancies that do not mind recruiting SSCE graduates.
B.sc is a plus!
Even if you can be a talent agent without a B.sc or B.A, sometimes, it comes in handy. You can decide to bag a degree in marketing, business management, or any other related course. Clients have different perspectives; while some may not mind that you don't have a degree, some may insist that you have a bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
Take an extra relevant course to skill up
The common wave recently is that a lot of people are not exactly practicing what they studied in school. If you studied an unrelated course in school but would love to be a talent agent, the good news is - you can! All you need to do is take courses that will teach you about the skills you need, from marketing to negotiation to communication skills and you are good to go!
Get the experience
You never can tell how good or best you can get with a thing until you start to practice it. So, if you want to become a talent agent, you need to find internships it entry-level positions that let you do your thing. Also, internships give you exposure and other knowledge you may have missed out on. It prepares you for a better and more interesting talent agent responsibility.
Make a name for yourself
Making a name for yourself can mean that you need to talk to people about what you do. Closed mouths don't get fed and that is true. The social media bio feature has afforded people the opportunity to communicate who they are and what they do. You can put up a nice bio, something like - "James John, Nigerian, Talent manager, want to work with me? Send a mail! (Inserts mail)." If you want to reach more audience, you can sell yourself further by leveraging your Twitter to tweet "Hi guys! I'm James, a talent manager and I just concluded my internship with XXX company. I am open to any talent managing opportunity, refer me to your friends and family".
Meet people who share the same view as you
If you are starting as a newbie, you certainly need to connect with people in the same field because they may have some tips for you. Also, you draw strength and get motivated seeing that there are people who have almost the same dreams as you. You can even bag opportunities from these people who probably have a ton of clients and could recommend you to one or more of them.
Start your Brand
We know what you are thinking but it is not hard! Start small, create a social media page, and find a name that communicates what you do. Share relevant posts; it could be pictures of yourself and your client, it could be anything, just make sure they are posts that reflect you and the services you offer.
Be intentional about your client base
This is a very important aspect! Don't be everywhere and indecisive; pick a niche you want to work on and identify the type of clients you would want to work with. Also, be sure that your goals and visions align with that of your client. Regardless of whoever you are working with, be it a new or old client, strive to give the best while maintaining a good work-life balance. Prioritize open communication, trust, and mutual respect as this can help you to maintain a good long-term relationship with your clients.
