How to boost your self-esteem

Self-esteem is a key aspect of our mental well-being that impacts our daily lives. It is the confidence and values we place in ourselves and our abilities, and it can play a significant role in our relationships, career, and overall welfare. If self-esteem has a huge influence on our lives, then it does on our opportunities too. 

When we lack confidence and believe that we're not capable or worthy, we may hold ourselves back from pursuing opportunities and taking risks. This can limit the potential for personal and professional growth, leading to missed opportunities and unfulfilled potential. In Nigeria, where societal pressures can be intense and expectations high, building and maintaining healthy self-esteem is essential. This is why we have gathered a number of tips that you can explore to heighten your self-esteem even as you journey through different phases of your life.

Identify and annul negative self-talk

Negative self-talk is a common problem for many people. The voices in our heads can be our own worst enemies, filling our minds with doubt and criticism. Some of these negative self-talk may include:

  • I look too fat. I'm not a better fit.

  • If I don't ace this interview, I'm done!

  • I'm terrible at public speaking, I messed up that one presentation last year.

  • If only I had worked harder, my relationship wouldn't have ended.

Instead of focusing on your weaknesses, try to focus on your strengths and achievements. When you catch yourself engaging in negative self-talk,  reframe your thoughts and focus on positive affirmations.

Choose to spend time with optimistic people 

Spend time with individuals who have a positive outlook on life; negative people can bring you down but positive people will always lift your spirit. This can help you to be more motivated, cheerful, and inspired while reducing stress and negativity. Also, be mindful of toxic relationships and set boundaries to protect your mental health.

Go big on self-care

Self-care involves taking care of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Engage in activities that bring you joy and happiness, whether it's spending time with loved ones, pursuing a hobby, or exercising thoughtfulness. Give yourself something to strive for so that when you achieve those goals, you can feel a sense of accomplishment. Furthermore, along the line, celebrate small successes, and use your attainments as a tool for motivation. 

Identify, accept, and celebrate your strength

You most likely won't be terrible at all things; recognize what you're good at and feel confident in those areas as this can help you approach challenges with more optimism and resilience. Also, taking the time to reflect on your skills and talents can help you uncover hidden strengths you might not have realized you had. This doesn't mean bragging or boasting about your abilities, but rather accepting them as a part of who you are and acknowledging the value they bring to your life and the lives of those around you.

Accept praises and compliments 

Many people struggle to accept compliments, often avoiding or downplaying them. This is because they have perceived themselves in a certain way. However, learning to accept compliments graciously and take them to heart can be a powerful way to boost self-esteem. Say "thank you for letting me know" when someone applauds you; regardless of how you see yourself, there are several other good ways people see you. 

Try leaving your comfort zone

Do something unusual; whether it is trying a new activity or speaking up in a meeting, taking risks and pushing yourself can help you feel more confident and capable. Even if you feel nervous or uncertain, remind yourself that every step you take is a step forward. As you begin to push yourself outside of your comfort zone, you may start to feel more confident and empowered.

Practice self-compassion

When you're nudging yourself to try new things, it is important to be kind and gracious with yourself. Acknowledge that stepping out of your comfort zone is hard, and give yourself credit for the effort you are making. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a friend who is going through a challenging time. 

Self-esteem is a compulsory part of human life. When you have a healthy sense of self-worth, you are more likely to take risks, pursue your goals, and engage in fulfilling relationships. Remember, building self-esteem is a process that takes time and effort, but the rewards are well worth it.
