How to Cope with the Current Naira Scarcity

How to Cope with the Current Naira Scarcity

Nigeria is currently facing a significant scarcity of naira notes, causing widespread stress and uncertainty for many Nigerians. This is due to the government's recent redesign of naira notes, which is yet to circulate effectively throughout the country. The scarcity has caused many to worry about how they will meet their basic needs and obligations, leading to a general sense of panic and tension.

With the rise in cash scarcity, many people have turned to Point of Sales (POS) machines as an alternative means of accessing their money. However, it is becoming increasingly common for POS vendors to charge exorbitant fees to people who are willing to withdraw cash using the POS machine. This practice has raised concerns among many Nigerians, as it is seen as a way for POS vendors to exploit the desperation of people who are struggling to access their money. While the current situation may be tough, we have curated some ways to cope with the cash scarcity and maintain financial stability.

Make use of Mobile apps/electronic payment platforms

Some Nigerian Commercial Banks may have been having it messy lately, but when they are not, you can use your mobile app to perform transactions when you need to. Also, there are several electronic payment platforms available, such as Paystack, Flutterwave, and Interswitch among others. These platforms offer an easy and convenient way to make transactions, and they are more efficient than physical cash transactions. With these platforms, you can make payments for goods and services, transfer money to friends and family, and pay bills, among other things, without the need for cash.

Prioritize your needs

More than ever now is the time to cut back on your spending and focus on the more essential things. By doing this, you can conserve your cash resources and ensure that you have enough to cover your most important expenses. For example, If Uber drivers in Lagos accept electronic transfers of money for transportation, Danfo drivers would most likely not do the same and you may have to pay in physical cash. If you can pay for anything via bank apps or any other electronic means, do so and keep your cash.

Plan Ahead

This might come off as stressful but it will save you in times like this. Whether you are a business owner or not, make an effort to anticipate your financial needs and obligations and plan accordingly. This can include setting aside emergency funds or making larger transactions in advance to avoid the stress of last-minute scrambling.

Seek Assistance

Recently, a lot of WhatsApp statuses and tweets have carried the message "I need cash" or "Who has cash," these are different ways you can reach out to people for help in these times of financial stress. You can also reach out to your friends and family, some may have extra cash to give out.

Stay Informed

Finally, it is important to stay informed about the situation and any changes in the availability of physical cash. Every day, there is a new development and this can help you plan and make informed decisions about your finances. Lately, the problem aggravated when traders and vendors started to refuse the old naira notes which makes it even more difficult for people to meet their daily needs. However, the supreme court has cleared the air stating that "Old naira notes remain a legal tender until the case is resolved. The case may take another turn tomorrow, so it is best to stay updated.

The current naira scarcity in Nigeria is undoubtedly causing stress and fear for many Nigerians. However, by taking the above tips to heart, it is possible to weather the storm. While the current situation is challenging, it is also an opportunity to explore new and resourceful ways of managing finances and navigating economic challenges.
