Another way to make money now, especially in Nigeria, is to share your knowledge. What do you know? How many people are willing to know what you know? How much will you charge if you have to charge people? These questions and many more run through your mind the moment you start to think of monetizing your business.
However, you must know that charging for what you know goes beyond just collecting money for it, you must also have the passion to pass this knowledge on to other people and "know the best way to go about it."
Most times, the best of passing your knowledge to people includes knowing how to perfectly do it. People pay for whatever they think you are good at and would expect value for it. This explains why you must be a good "online teacher" if you must make money from teaching people what you know. Here are a few things we think you need to know.
Prepare and send out details of the class before the day
Sending out details before the day of class prepares your students for whatever they are coming to learn. Also, you want to include everything they need to come to class with. If you need them to come with any material, communicate this information earlier. Also, details should include the date, time, and venue. Don't send out fliers for your class saying "Learn how to make crunchy groundnuts in 2 days" and add "Time and venue will be communicated later" but "You can pay via…" Nobody will take you seriously if you do things like this; if you have not made a concrete decision about the class, don't send out the fliers.
Know how to Use Conference Call Tools
The best way to bring everyone into the picture and carry them along during an online class is to adopt the use of conference call tools such as Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, and even WhatsApp (depending on the number of students). These tools can take more people and allow for interactive sessions where participants can ask questions, engage in discussions, and collaborate on activities. Also, using features like screen sharing, chat functions, and polls can enhance engagement and participation among students. Providing clear instructions and guidelines for using these tools ensures that all participants can easily join and navigate the online class.
You are the teacher but don't be the only talker
You need to be sure that you are carrying the class along. Encourage active participation from students by incorporating interactive elements into the lesson, such as asking questions, initiating discussions, and encouraging students to share their thoughts and ideas. If the class is not a large one, you can make efforts to know each person by name and engage them along the line. Regularly, check for understanding and provide opportunities for students to ask questions or seek clarification on concepts. This strategy makes the students want to sign up for another class especially if your classes are in editions.
Share Materials that can be used after the class
When online classes are organized and people register, for some reason, one or two people may not be able to make it to the class. Also, it is not possible to have everyone catch every single thing you've said during the class. And, because you want to give value for the money paid, you must have prepared material that would be available for everyone who had deemed it fit to register for the class. This material must be comprehensive and well-organized, covering the key concepts, topics, and resources discussed during the class. It should include a summary of the main points covered, along with any additional resources, or supplementary materials that may be helpful for further learning. Also, the material should be easily accessible to all participants, whether through email, a dedicated online platform, or a file-sharing service.
Request Feedback
Especially if it's your first time, you want to know if you did well, so ask for feedback. Requesting feedback is essential for improving and refining your teaching approach in case of next time. Encourage students to leave reviews or provide feedback on their learning experience, whether through a survey, email, or directly on the platform where the class was hosted. You can also utilize features available on the platform, such as rating systems or comment sections, to gather feedback from participants. However, you want to be open to constructive criticism and use it as an opportunity to identify areas for improvement and make adjustments for future classes.
