Job Prospects in Nigeria as the Government Pursues Starlink Collaboration with Elon Musk

Nigeria is currently trying to see if partnering with Elon Musk's Satelite Starlink will create more job opportunities for people in the country. The Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani revealed this in a statement made on Monday, 20th November, 2023.

Bosun Tijani tweeted that he had a productive discussion with Ryan Goodnight, Senior Director of Global Licensing and activation at SpaceX, during the sidelines of ITU-WRC 23. According to Tijani, Goodnight highlighted Nigeria as their largest market in Africa. They also talked about the rising demand for Starlink within Nigeria and explored strategies to connect underserved and unserved communities.

During their conversation, Tijani proposed the potential to generate numerous employment opportunities in Nigeria. He suggested initiatives like establishing a certified installer and maintenance program for Starlink.

Furthermore, he mentioned the possibility of collaborating with local hardware startups to manufacture repeater boxes. Tijani expressed the goal of encouraging various tech companies to invest and fortify Nigeria's technological landscape, mentioning Elon Musk in the dialogue. "We intend to encourage every tech company to invest and deepen our tech ecosystem @elonmusk" Tijani stated.

Elon Musk's Starlink is a groundbreaking constellation of satellites that made its way into Nigeria earlier this year;  the goal was to ensure that there is reliable, high-speed internet connectivity even in remote regions, bridging the digital divide and empowering communities with unprecedented access to information, education, and economic opportunities. Despite initial concerns from Nigerians regarding the satellite's cost at launch, they have now become its biggest market.

However, a change came sometime in October after the product prices were cut by roughly 20% to capture an even larger market share in Nigeria. It worked because even until now, sustained demand for the product in Nigeria continues to thrive, indicating the effectiveness of the price reduction strategy.

Nigeria still suffers from unemployment, so the step taken by Bosun Tijani already addresses the pressing issue and we hope that these initiatives will truly contribute significantly to job creation in Nigeria.
