The first GSM call was made by MTN on May 16 following the highly regarded Nigerian GSM auction organized by the Nigerian Communications Commission. One of Nigeria's four GSM licenses cost $285 million and was purchased by MTN in January 2001. Nigeria's mobile communications infrastructure has already received about US$1.8 billion in funding. Since beginning operations in August 2001, MTN has steadily increased the geographic scope of its services throughout Nigeria. It currently provides services in 223 cities and towns, more than 10,000 villages and communities, an increasing number of highways, all 36 states of Nigeria, and the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja. Many of these towns and villages are now getting access to the telecoms industry for the first time.

The company's digital microwave transmission backbone, the 3,400 Kilometre YellowBahn, is regarded as the largest digital microwave transmission infrastructure in all of Africa. In January 2003, President Olusegun Obasanjo gave it a formal opening.
