Despite the new increase in the school fees of Nigerian Law School students, resumption is slated for November and several new students are preparing towards the date. If you belong to this category, you are probably giddy with excitement and at the same time have a lot of questions which will be mostly about how to get things done to pass law school successfully.
There have been different stories of people going to Law school and making it out successfully. This is not to say that there aren't people who have an entirely different story but the point is that success is achievable and you can write your own success story too. However, you need to know that a few tips here and there can help you find your way even when it looks like you are lost.
Spend two hours a day reading
Whether you love being a bookie or not, the best way to help yourself in law school is to spend at least 2 hours a day reading, pick a case, and read it. If you finish it before 2 hours, you can take another case and spend the remaining time left reading it. If you do this every day of the week and are taking 7 courses, you’ll have read most of the courses by the time the exam is near. Always start with a recent case that has reviewed earlier decisions because chances are that other cases are referred to and explained in reading that case. If you are consistent with this, you will be amazed by the results you will get at the end of the semester.
Figure out what works for you in time
You already know the stipulated time you have come to the law school to spend. So, waste no time in figuring out what works for you because one size definitely doesn't fit all. If you want, you can always read alone, at the same time, you can also choose to meet up with your colleagues to discuss a case such that as they share their knowledge with you, you can always do the same. If you don't know a thing, make sure you ask and if the person you are asking isn't coming through, you can ask another person but be sure that you get your answers.
Differentiate between reading and studying
Don't spend all day reading without studying because they are not the same thing. You could read a thing and not be sure of how to talk about it or answer questions about it. So, instead of just reading these cases, study them thoroughly and understand what they say, and be sure you can talk about them and answer any question that comes from them. Unlike just reading, studying goes beyond merely reading; it involves a more deliberate and focused approach towards understanding, analyzing, and internalizing every single material you come across as a law school student.
Prioritize your social life and mental health too
Yes, law school will require that you study a lot but also, it is never a reason for you to go weary on your social life or care less about your mental health. Just as you take your books seriously, take yourself seriously too. Take care of yourself and eat well. Also, if you don't feel well, visit the hospital. You are not designed to study all through the day, so you can take breaks whenever you want. If there is any event happening around law school that you think you should attend, don't hesitate. You are not going to fail your law school exams because of just an event if you map out your priorities properly.
Have good study partners ready to brief and share cases
Most times, the trick is in finding someone to do all of these with. Select people who you can trust enough to be your study buddies because having people brief you and share cases with you reduces at least 50% of your workload. During these study groups with your partners, make sure you take down points and notes that you can check out later when you are alone.
Don't sleep on past questions too
Past questions contain a list of exam or test questions that have already been done by the previous set. Reviewing past questions can help you prepare for your exams as you can have an idea of how questions may be constructed or asked. You can also get to familiarize yourself with the format, structure, and topics that have historically appeared in exams. After you are done with the past questions, you can now gauge your understanding of the subject matter, identify recurring themes, and refine your exam-taking strategies.
Remember that there is no single way or style to navigate through law school and pass your exams. Just do what works for you and put in your best every day.
