Zoom About to Lay off 1300 Employees

One of the biggest video conferencing apps, Zoom, has announced its decision to cut jobs. This decision will see about 1300 workers laid off from the company. Zoom layoffs are one of the latest bad news reports from big tech companies around the world.

How many people did Zoom Layoff?

The decision made by the tech giants as announced by the CEO will affect about 1300 workers, which is about 15% of it's workforce. Eric Yuan said, "We have made the tough but necessary decision, to decrease our workforce by approximately 15%. This means we will be saying goodbye to about 1300, talented, hardworking colleagues."

What is the reason for the layoff?

In the statement made by the CEO, it was said that the layoff was necessary because of the uncertainty of the global economy, also, checking the effect it will have on the company's customers. Yuan in his words said, "I know it is a difficult message to hear, and also not the one I wish to deliver. The growth trajectory of the company changed when many businesses has to run remotely, during the time of 2019, and 2020 pandemics.

During this period, to meet demands, we had to increase our workforce times three, with 24 months. But as the world transitions to life after the pandemic, we saw that many people and businesses relied on Zoom. The uncertainty of the global economy, and the effect it can have on our customers, we took this hard - yet important decision to cut jobs.

Furthermore, we will look inward to reset ourselves, so we can have a way to deliver well to our customers even in this economic environment, and still achieve Zoom's long-term vision.

Final Words

Zoom’s announcement is the latest of mass job cuts among the tech giants globally. In a trend that began with Twitter in 2022, other tech giants such as Meta, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have all drastically reduced their workforce in recent months. Seeing so many layoffs with big companies, we hope we won't see this with most of the companies we have in Nigeria. One of the major reasons for the layoff is because of the economic downgrade globally, and how sure are we won't start seeing this with some startups?
