Experiencing a sudden pay cut can be an unpleasant experience for a worker because it simply means that you don't get to earn as much as you used to. A pay cut may require you to cut down on your expenses and this adjustment on finance can be inconvenient for you. From making difficult decisions to prioritizing essential needs over discretionary spending - an entirely new way to manage your finances creeps in on you. While this happens, it is important to look for ways to salvage your finances. 

Talk about it

No one expects a pay cut but when it happens, it is important to talk about it with your employer in a constructive manner. But before this, get the information you need to know; find out if the company's decision affected just you or every other person. Also, take time to understand the reason for the pay cut as this can help you to assess the situation better. If you get to find out that it is just you who got affected, conduct an evaluation test on your performance to check if there was a time that you came short. If you have to talk to your employer, express your willingness to know the reason for the decision, and if it is something you can relate to, understand the company's decision and circumstances. You can also try to negotiate, anything can work.

Update your Budget

When you are faced with a pay cut and the reality dawns on you, it becomes a necessity to modify your budget to accommodate the new circumstances. Even if you had a budget that worked well before, it is very important to consider your new salary, and then draw out a new budget. Take time to evaluate what your new salary will be, draft out your expenses, and expunge the unnecessary ones. Starting a side hustle means extra income and this can help to supplement whatever you are earning. Do market research to see what people need and would purchase effortlessly. Also, look for an opportunity and a space that supports your idea, and answer the question of if people will purchase the product in a certain area. You can also pick a product that your co-workers will find beneficial because, along the line, they may happen to be your first customers. 

Upskill  

If you discover that your pay cut was due to incompetence or underperformance, see it as an opportunity to develop yourself. Mark out the areas that need improvement and identify the different resources that can help you upskill. These resources could be online courses, conferences, workshops, or projects. Then develop a learning plan, how much time are you looking to commit to learning each week, would you go through your course thrice a week or more? Would you rather learn on weekends and focus on your task at work on the weekdays? Create a plan that you can stick to if you are looking to get good results.

If you have upskilled and made extra efforts to improve your performance but there are still no changes in your pay, you can start to look out for job opportunities. Do a self-evaluation based on the new skills you have acquired and update your CV. Apply to jobs that demand your skills and experience, and talk to people who can help with your need for a new job. While sending out applications, you can also take on contract or freelance jobs along the line.
