Interviews are a great determinant of whether or not a person will get a job; so, it is safe to say that they are a big deal. While some people have prior experience and know what to expect from interviews, it is a first time thing for others. However, no matter how experienced you may be, you should prepare for every interview because the moment will always be different. Chances are you are meeting new people, hearing new ideas, and answering unexpected questions. If you are attending an interview for the first time and you need help preparing, we got you!
Confirm if it is an onsite or online interview
As a first-timer, when you get an interview invite, check to see where it is happening. Usually, the invite should indicate whether it is an onsite or online interview. If there is a part of the venue that is not clear, you can make an inquiry or confirmation before the day of the interview. Knowing the form the interview will take helps you to get prepared; if it is happening onsite, use Google Maps to confirm the proximity to your home. You may also need to check the designated video platform for the interview if it is going to be virtual; you can take time to get familiar with the platform if it is one that you have never used.
Run through your CV/resume for the umpteenth time
You have submitted your resume but it is quite possible to have tiny discrepancies that you may have to provide explanations to. Therefore it is advisable to peruse your resume for accuracy, consistency, and relevance. If you detect any form of contradiction, come up with a valid reason to address it before you attend your interview. Also, think of questions that may arise due to the content of your resume. While you may not be able to guess all questions correctly, it saves you the stress of being entirely unfamiliar with all of the questions.

Get familiar with the company
Every employer would expect that job candidates have at least little information about the company. This gives your employer a sense of belief that you are interested in the company's purpose. Furthermore, during the interview process, you may be asked to share what you know about the company and how you think your role can be of help. Check their website and visit their social media platforms for as much information as you need.
Talk to someone that has attended several interviews
Sometimes, talking to someone who has been in several interviews can help to raise your confidence. Ask the person questions about what he/she thinks you should know. Let the person tell you which of the interviews got them a job and request that they share what they did differently. While you may be applying for a role different from theirs, it is still possible to get ideas that can help you ace your interview.
Read extensively about your role
Majority of the interview questions will most likely be related to the role you are applying for. Therefore, you need to get your facts right; read about the role, ask questions from people who have worked in the role, make extensive research that will help you knock out any question the interviewer may have prepared. Your potential employer needs to see that you have enough knowledge about the role and that you have an idea of what is required of you. Also, you can revisit the job description on the job advert to be sure you are on track.
Prepare to wear something really good
You must have heard a lot of times that you need to dress well for your interview. This information will never be outdated because it is what your employer sees first before they go ahead to engage you. Check your wardrobe before the day of your interview so that you would have enough time to decide on your outfit. Pick out something simple and professional, yet comfortable. If you see the need to up your game a bit, use a very mild cologne and simple jewelry (for ladies). You can also play “dress up” to see the outcome of the outfit you have picked.
