Tips for preventing work burnout

Tips for preventing work burnout

According to research, about 90% of employees have suffered from work burnout at some point within the last year. While there has been a high prevalence of this situation, 21% of workers affirmed that organizations are not taking effective measures to curb it. Burnouts have loads of negative consequences; they can result in physical and mental problems for workers, they can take a toll on efficiency and productivity, and they can also lead to a high rate of employee turnover. As unusual as this may sound, one can burn out doing work they hate, and also doing work they love. Work burnout happens when an employee is stressed, overwhelmed, or emotionally exhausted as a result of excessive tasks or workload.

What forms can work burnout take?

Burnout can manifest itself in different ways which include physical, mental, emotional, and intellectual. Physical burnout can reveal symptoms such as tiredness, headaches, loss of appetite, and change in sleep patterns. Emotional and Mental burnout can cause you to start being forgetful, impatient with co-workers, irritable, and disconnected from work. When you are intellectually burned out, you find it difficult to be creative, and productive. It is important to identify how you are burned out so that you can adopt effective steps to address it.

The tips you need!

Burnouts are not good for your health! These tips may help you:

You don't always have to do it ASAP (As soon as possible)

It is easy to get caught up in the moment and assume that every task requires immediate attention.  The truth is, taking a step back and assessing the situation can help you to figure out what tasks need prompt action and what can wait. Small steps can also lead to big results, so if anyone is trying to pressure you into doing a task immediately, you don't have to take it because the human mind and body are not wired to always " go at it"; if you can be fast this minute, you don't have to be the next minute. The earlier you realize this, the better for your mental health.

Outsource tasks

If you run a small business and you find yourself handling all the core responsibilities from answering customers to managing social media accounts to designing the graphical content to updating your website, chances are you are most likely going to burn out. This is why you need to practice the art of delegating responsibilities and tasks that are not your strength to individuals that can do it without hassle. I have a friend who runs a minimalist jewelry business and she has to take pictures of products, post them on social media, take stock, respond to customers, follow up on dispatch riders, and other important things. She fell ill and could not do business for a while, when she returned, she hired a social media manager and an assistant. Outsourcing helps you to focus your attention and energy on aspects of your work that you enjoy and excel at.

Stop and take a break

If you go on and on about work, it is important to recognize when you need to step back from your tasks to take rest and recharge. Many people don't enjoy taking enough rest, it comes off to them as counterproductive and inconvenient for them. While some people love to rest, they are guilty about taking it because they believe that they should never leave tasks hanging. However, breaks are important if you want to maintain your performance and prevent burnout. Engage in any form of relaxing activity that suits you, take a nap or a walk. Do anything that can help you clear your head and improve your mood. You can also choose to Facetime your friend to catch up on the gist you must have missed. Just be sure that you are happy in your break period.

Read a physical book before going to bed

After a long day at work, many people are used to the habit of scrolling through their phones either to surf the internet or do other things. One way to prevent burnout is to avoid consuming digital media while you prepare to go to bed. Instead, you can choose to read a physical book. The blue light that emits from smartphones is a major interference to the body's sleep-wake cycle and this makes it difficult to fall asleep in time or stay asleep all through the night. Also, consuming stimulating and stressful content before going to bed increases the level of anxiety and stress, creating a good atmosphere for burnout to occur. Reading, on the other hand, can prevent distraction and help you drift into sleep peacefully.

Do not skip meals

Some people become so engrossed in work that they forget to eat throughout the day. If you want to prevent burnout, then you should not skip meals, breakfast most importantly. Prioritize eating habits because you need the nutrients and energy to function optimally. When you eat, ensure that you are having a balanced diet, eat vegetables, and drink fruit juice. When you work without eating, your blood sugar will most likely drop, your productivity is decreased, and your mood changes. To feel at your best both physically and mentally, eat at the appropriate time, and also take enough water.

Self-care

If you work enough, you deserve every good thing! It may be a new set of skincare products, a new phone, gaming pads, a spa treatment, or a new hair. These intentional actions take care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. If rewarding yourself for your hard work makes you feel happy, do it! If you feel up to it, plan lunch and call your friends over, eat pizza, and play the flip bottle challenge. If you are close to experiencing burnout, self-care is your best bet to recharge and refocus.

Often, burnout is caused by chronic stress and exhaustion which stems from prolonged periods of work or unhealthy work patterns. However, taking effective measures as discussed above can help to reduce the risk of burnout and improve your overall well-being.
